These ceremonies to the Pachamama are basically two types, in the homes in which particular offerings are made and in the summit or mountains community offerings are made where Andean priests perform ancestral ceremonies, so that the Pachamama will satisfy their hunger and grant them blessings.

The offerings made to Mother Earth have as an elementary origin the relationship between the Andean man, especially the peasant, the pachamama or mother earth.

These offerings are a characteristic way in which man returns to Pachamama what he has extracted from it. The fundamental purpose is the restoration of reciprocity between the human being and nature.

"The Pachamama is a deity who represents Mother Earth, being a protector and provider, source of life and fertility"

In the same way these rituals are destined to the Apus or spirits of the mountain by means of the dispatches. The Apu represents the masculine aspect of nature while the pachamama is the feminine aspect. The Apu is responsible for the protection of animals, men and fecunda to the Pachamama. To reach this rank one has to go through a test which is called Karpay after this is devoted to the service of a certain Apu.
